Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

Note: we uploaded this show as a youtube link since we were having trouble with uploading the whole show to your player. On October 17th 2018 recreational cannabis became legalized across Canada. It was a day we had circled on the calendar for months leading up to it, and we knew we needed a special program to reflect the historic nature of the day. We decided to have one of our hosts, Tom Murphy, anchor the show live from the only dedicated cannabis store in the province. Tom handled hosting duties from there for the first 15 minutes, showing viewers scenes at stores from across the province and then did a live interview to find out how the NSLC was coping with a busy day. After the live special, Amy Smith kept the cannabis theme going with more scenes from across the country, as well as an interview with a clinical psychologist who had concerns about legalization. This interview gave us an important counter-balance to the more celebratory tone of the show. And as always, our meteorologist, Ryan Snoddon provided live dynamic weather forecasts throughout the program.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

On a typical day producers, reporters, videographers, editors and technical staff in our newsroom contribute to CBC Nova Scotia News. For the live special portion of this broadcast we used our satellite truck to ensure we had a clean, reliable feed coming in to our control room.
