Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

Please consider Jacob Lorinc for the Jim MacNeill New Journalist Award. Lorinc joined the Times & Transcript in September 2018 as a general assignment reporter. As his first full-time position at a newspaper, Lorinc has shown a keen interest in telling personal stories and producing enterprise journalism. In September, Lorinc landed his second A1 article by telling the story of Jason Betts, a Moncton-born actor who scored his first A-list role after years of struggling with his identity as a young gay man growing up in a deeply religious household. In October, Lorinc recounted the epic journey of Amine Maazaoui, a Tunisian refugee who took refuge in a church in Shediac for two years after he was denied asylum. The story pairs extensive interviews with Maazaoui with the accounts of the pastor who agreed to let him stay, the family that bought his groceries, and the refugee clinic that fought for his right to live in Canada. Then, in December, nearly 50 years after the establishment of Kouchibouguac National Park, Lorinc sat down with some of the 1,200 residents whose homes were expropriated from the area to document their lives before and after their removal. These deeply personal stories resulted in a comprehensive two-part series on the devastating consequences of the largest forcible removal of people by Parks Canada in Canadian history. Over a three-week period, Lorinc conducted extensive interviews with family members in both English and French, analyzed decades-old government documentation, travelled between Moncton and Kent County, and collected old news reports and academic literature to understand why — after so many years – many residents believe they were mistreated by the governments of New Brunswick and Canada.
