Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

An editor at Rural Delivery had seen an exhibit of John Little’s ironwork at a gallery in Halifax, and asked freelance writer A.E. Smith to write a profile delving into the intersection between Little’s artistic sensibilities and the more utilitarian concerns that inspired his early efforts in blacksmithing when he first moved to rural Nova Scotia 50 years ago. Smith agreed to take on the assignment, and arranged to visit Little in his shop. He approached the story with an attitude of genuine curiosity, seeking to gain an understanding of the craftsman and the craft.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

A.E. Smith undertook the assignment independently, without any resources from the publisher. Notably, the writer also did the photography for this story.
