Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

This fishery edition was a labour of love! As the daughter of a fisherman, and someone who spent much of my life in a fishing outport, I knew personally how the role of women had changed over the decades. Telling the unique stories - some mom and daughter duos, some who fished with partners or took over from their own father - was important. Capturing how these women were 'rockin' the boat' by being captains and large and in charge was key! They all had such unique stories to tell! This edition was one of my most proudest accomplishments.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

Besides myself, the managing editor, we have one staff writer. This edition took so much time and planning. Besides the many stories to tell and coordinate, we had to work with women who were up at 3 am and worked until they shut their eyes at night. Besides being captains and fishers, these women are community volunteers, moms and grandmas balancing life, home and community. This was a true labour of love for all. As a weekly, we don't have the luxury of time. Even special 'themed' editions only get the same amount of hours in each day. We do what we can with a very small, but dedicated, staff.
