Running time (TV/Radio):

Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

A scanner sparked to life. A newsroom sprung into action. August 10, 2018 was the day Fredericton changed forever. Four people - including two Fredericton Police Force officers - were executed outside an apartment complex on the city's north side. The Daily Gleaner team's coverage of that day - with zero time, and zero warning - was a day will live in this newspaper's lore forever. Every member of our team contributed - via web hits, photos, stories, video, commentaries, editing. It was all done at breakneck speed, while retaining our utmost commitment to accuracy. We spoke to the locals, the police, the decision-makers. We put together timelines of what had unfolded, and how. We showed Frederictonians, and New Brunswickers, the deadly day that had unravelled in the capital. The result? An edition of the Gleaner that attracted national and international praise. An edition that was, most importantly, the best single source of news, analysis and commentary of a horrific local event. The shootings happened early Friday morning - the content updated online all day. It continued until well after night had fallen, and included coverage of a candlelight vigil attended by hundreds. And Saturday's paper? In 25 years in this business, it's the best I've ever been a part of.

We had no time. We redirected every available reporter to the story, and they fanned out across the site to ensure we had it covered - literally from all angles.
