Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

I was enthralled with Amy McKay's several best selling books and her intriguing ties to Nova Scotia. While reading her novella, Half Spent was the Night, I decided that I wanted to learn much more about her journey - especially how she came to settle in rural Nova Scotia after growing up in the midwestern US. I pitched the idea to the editor of the Nova Scotian at the Chronicle Herald and she said yes right away - with a deadline of one week. I made the call to Ami in Scotts Bay and drove to her home to interview her there on a crisp mid-winters day. Interviewing her in her home was the best part of the story as I was surrounded by everything she talked about. The difficult part of this feature was having to cut out so much of our interview - I could have written more than one long form feature if I'd been given the words. Her story - and her life - is filled with magic which she truly embraces on a daily basis.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

Not much! I was offered a week and $125 to complete the story - no travel or other expenses included. (That is normal for the Herald which is unfortunate for many freelancers these days.) In addition, I supplied the photos used, with Ami's assistance.
