Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

The cover of our 92nd issue “New Voices, Better World” (photographed by Jason Hennessy) was chosen in correspondence with our “VOICES” series of video stories highlighting the work of Black authors. We had originally found the image within a book we had been sent called Every. Now. Then. Reframing nationhood by the Art Gallery of Ontario and it fit the tone of Voices very well. Voices put a spotlight on Black/African Atlantic Canadian authors. This was all happening around the same time as the Black Lives Matter movement that took place in the wake of the killing of George Floyd. This photo came courtesy of Britta B., a Canadian poet. This photo is part of her instillation at the art gallery of Ontario. Britta says “As a mixed-race Black Canadian woman in poetry, having roles models that I can identify and feel represented by is invaluable. I hope this image re-affirms the value and urgency of making space for equity-seeking voices. I am especially interested in giving more opportunities to Black, Indigenous and racialized-communities to see themselves empowered, cared for and celebrated.” This issue was released in the fall of 2020.
