Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

Three days after Sipekne’katik First Nation launched their moderate livelihood fishery plan, the violence escalated on the water. The non-Indigenous fishers say the fishery is illegal. A Mi'kmaw boat was surrounded by Acadian fishers, who were stealing the traps and chasing the Mi’kmaw boat. No DFO or RCMP interviewed. I was on the Mi’kmaw boat during the attack, and filmed the event. This gives a direct perspective of the attack and reaction from Sipekne’katik community members, the story reveals the violence and racism against the Mi’kmaw, while exercising their treat right, a historic event that was diminished by the violent backlash.!

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

This was the beginning of a three week stay in Saulnierville NS, I reported from inside the checkpoints at the wharf and the Edinburgh Pound. Paul Poirer travelled from Halifax to Saulnierville Sept 21, to help edit the video, some of the broll and interview were filmed by Poirier previous days before. Trina Roache edited script and co-wrote web article.
